Our whole school literacy approach is based on the Four Blocks Literacy Framework. This framework provides a comprehensive approach to teaching literacy and was originally developed by Dr Patricia Cunningham and Dr Dorothy Hall then later adapted by Dr Karen Erickson and Dr David Koppenhaver for students with disabilities.
The Four Blocks include Guided and Shared Reading, Writing, Self-Selected Reading and Working with Words. A balanced literacy program enables students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in order for them to become effective, literate communicators.
At Malibu School, we believe by implementing a balanced literacy approach every student can meet literacy targets and improve their literacy skills given the optimum environment, instructions and support. ALL students are provided with numerous and varied opportunities to learn to read and write every day.
