Balanced Literacy

Our whole school literacy approach is based on the Four Blocks approach developed by Dr Patricia Cunningham and Dr Dorothy Hall from the Centre for Literacy and Disabilities of North Carolina. It is a balanced literacy program that allows students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills towards becoming effective, literate communicators. It provides a framework where through daily instruction in the “Four Blocks – Guided Reading, Self-selected Reading, Writing and Working with Words” – ALL students are provided with numerous and varied opportunities to learn to read and write.

We believe by implementing the four blocks students will have the opportunity to learn literacy skills. At Malibu we believe every student can meet literacy targets and improve their literacy skills given the optimum environment, instructions and support.
